POSITION PURPOSE: Position provides coordination of simulation within nursing curricula for PN and ASN programs. Serves as simulation education specialist administering, advising, designing, developing, and providing quality, engaging interprofessional simulation for nursing and healthcare students. May engage students outside of class in support of the curriculum through simulation efforts; provide institutional support and community service; participate meaningfully in student retention and completion initiatives; support the College’s mission and strategic plan initiatives; conform to regional expectations of faculty performance and engagement. May be called upon to provide education and training regarding simulation to nursing faculty. May be loaded up to fifty (50) percent in traditional faculty capacity when needed. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

I.          LEADERSHIP/COORDINATION 

Manage and direct interprofessional simulation activities for the service area and campus School of Nursing. Utilize current simulation standards and implementation of best practices in carrying out simulation and lab activities. Collaborate with faculty to develop simulation scenarios to promote student learning, critical thinking, and clinical decision making. Assist faculty to plan, implement, and evaluate the integration of simulation into curriculum to promote student learning, critical thinking and clinical decision making. Facilitate faculty development related to use of simulation. Provide oversight for the coordination and scheduling for the use of simulation and skills labs for: simulation, skills lab, open lab, student projects, and other groups requesting lab space. Ensure maintenance and proper function of all simulation mannequins and other simulation equipment, including an inventory of all simulation equipment. Supervise Simulation Technician and/or lab assistant and/or fulfill the role of a Simulation Technician role as appropriate. Make recommendations for additional purchases of simulation equipment. Identify opportunities for improvement and innovation, and planning change initiatives for the integration of simulation in clinical education. Investigate and submit proposals for potential grant opportunities to fund new simulation initiatives. Create and deliver professional presentations regarding all aspects of simulation to local, state, and national groups. Collect data on the effectiveness of simulation on student learning, critical thinking, and clinical decision making.

II.        INSTRUCTION

Serve as a clinical resource for students and remediate students using simulation. Demonstrate ability to use computer hardware and software and other associated simulation technology. Maintain familiarity with electronic medical records and current medication delivery methods. May be loaded up to fifty (50) percent in traditional faculty capacity when needed. III.       PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 

Participate in professional development activities with related health care providers and educators to advance instructional and technical skills as well as maintain current knowledge within the field of study. Participate in scholarly activities related to the discipline/focus, in fulfillment of annual performance plans, and as required for certification and licensure. Maintain current knowledge of trends and innovations in simulation for nursing education including contemporary pedagogy, digital technology, and other technology related to teaching that best support student learning.

IV.       COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND BUSINESS OUTREACH

Participate in community service activities on behalf of the college to advance the college’s relationships within its service area as appropriate for department/division/college.  Develop community/industry/business contacts to advance college relationships within service area as appropriate in the department and division. Serve as liaison with area health care facilities regarding practice policy changes that impact simulation/lab environment.

INSTITUTIONAL SUPPORT

Provide institutional support as requested by college administration such as participation on committees and task forces, projects related to college and program accreditations, and grant-related projects.

Attend commencement and participate as assigned by regional administration.

Participate in college/campus-wide meetings and departmental/division/faculty meetings.

Participate in career service and alumni activities.

Support program/department chair in program management activities.

Adhere to college and regional academic policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Master’s degree in nursing from a regionally accredited institution. Must have 3 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse in an acute care setting.  One year of teaching experience in nursing theory, clinical, or campus lab settings desired. Experience in simulation pedagogy required. Must possess a current, unencumbered Indiana Registered Nurse license. Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) certification preferred or willingness to obtain. Possess a willingness to lead the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) accreditation process. Must have strong working knowledge of current technologies appropriate to area of instruction, faculty credentials as outlined in the ASOM 7.1 as applicable to the specific area of instruction.
