What you will be doing  

On our advanced engineering apprenticeship, you'll get to grips with the cutting-edge technology needed to deliver a first-class service – covering everything from robotics to intelligent sorting machines. On top of a unique foundation for understanding all of the technology involved in delivery, you'll learn how the organisation uses it to improve its business.  

  

We have two routes available under this Engineering Technician apprenticeship, we have the Mechatronics route and also have the Design route  

The purpose of these roles is:  

  •  
  • To identify, rectify and test automation assets that have been subjected to fault conditions. 
  • To ensure that component usage is recorded on technical reporting systems when replaced on automation assets. 
  • To ensure that Royal Mail Technical processes and systems are complied with at all times. 
  •  
  • To ensure that all tools, special tools, equipment and technical work areas are safe and well organised. 
  • To identify continuous improvement opportunities utilising Royal Mail technical systems and processes. 
  • Actively partaking in the round-by-round boards  
  • Undertake all training automation courses, which may entail staying away from the parent unit  

As part of your role, you will  

  • Perform the day-to-day delivery of maintenance tasks, specifically preventative/predictive maintenance, and corrective maintenance and conduct performance improvement initiatives, observing workplan compliance for maintenance to achieve equipment optimisation. 
  • Provide effective and efficient support to the Operational and Technical managers, MTL and Team Leader/s, including completion and submission of end-of-shift reports, root cause analysis, fault logging  
  • Identify the root cause of automation faults/breakdowns and prioritize corrective actions to meet operational processing objectives in association with team leaders, making full use of the relevant central support systems. 
  • Monitor and review day-to-day equipment performance and improve automation outputs in partnership with operations. 
  • Implement asset updates and modifications to ensure the correct configuration and reliability of automation assets, in a timely manner as directed by team leaders.  
  • Assist in the risk assessment process, and adhere to Engineering Safe Systems of Work, maintaining a safe working environment and tools for the job. 
  • Identify and raise Continuous Improvement opportunities  
  • Support high maintenance standards including delivery of 5s with all Engineering areas and automation   
  • Ensure the effective provision of automation spares, including the recording of usage and cost, 
  • Provide a pro-active and flexible approach to new equipment, systems and ways of working. This will involve integration with operations to fulfil the goals of TPM/AOA, meetings/briefings and improvement forums.  
  • Develop personal knowledge, skills and abilities, channelling energy and commitment ensuring effective contribution to team performance in line with Maintenance Level Agreement.

What you do need is a natural curiosity and a strong work ethic. We're looking for people who can work well as part of a team and are driven to find the answers to problems.  

Your apprenticeship  

If you enjoy working as part of a team, like solving problems and have a practical flair, you’ll find the Advanced Engineering Apprenticeships has a lot to offer. You’ll spend part of your first year in Blackburn, working and learning alongside other engineering apprentices and getting under the skin of how things work in an engineering environment. The costs of hotel accommodation, evening meals and travel are met by the employer and there will be no cost to you. As part of this, you'll then learn how to fix, maintain and review our technology. 

As part of your apprenticeship, it will be your responsibility to ensure all learning documentation is completed to a high standard and timescales. You will be supported in role to develop the necessary Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours to fulfil the role of an automation maintenance technician

Starting Salary: £14000 to £22000, dependent on age
